Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon (4g) salt

  • 2 eggs

  • ⅓ cup (80g) sugar

  • 1½ teaspoons (5g) instant dry yeast

  • 2 tablespoons (30g) honey

  • ⅔ cup (160ml) warm milk

  • 2 tablespoons (30g) vegetable oil

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil, for deep frying

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Dough

In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt.

Add the eggs, sugar, yeast, honey, and warm milk. Mix until a rough dough forms.

Add the vegetable oil and knead for about 8–10 minutes until the dough is smooth and soft.

Step 2: Divide the Dough

Cut the dough into 12 equal pieces.

Roll each piece into a short log.

Lightly brush with oil, cover, and let the dough rest for 15 minutes.

Step 3: Shape the Twists

Roll each piece into a rope about 10–12 inches (25–30 cm) long.

Tie the rope into a simple knot.

Tuck both ends underneath the knot to create a neat, round shape.

Step 4: Let the Dough Rise

Place the shaped twists on a lightly greased tray.

Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for 45–60 minutes, or until doubled in size.

Step 5: Fry

Heat vegetable oil to 340–350°F (170–175°C).

Carefully fry a few twists at a time for 3–4 minutes, turning often until evenly golden brown.

Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.

Serve

Enjoy warm or at room temperature. They are delicious on their own or served with tea or coffee.

Tips

  • Make sure the milk is warm, not hot, so the yeast works properly.

  • Don't overcrowd the pan while frying.

  • Fry over medium heat so the inside cooks completely without burning the outside.

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
